The bigger Automat: a 2M Red, aluminium sandwich plinth and the same German-built automatic mechanism.
Model history: The Automat A2 is Pro-Ject's second fully automatic turntable, following the A1, adding a floating sub-chassis, an upgraded Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, 78rpm playback support, and a heavier build.

Who it suits
Best suited to: a first serious turntable for an existing or planned amp-and-speakers setup. Less ideal for: plugging straight into passive speakers with no amp — check the built-in phono stage row above, and note most hi-fi decks still need external amplification.
Good to know
- Has a built-in phono stage, so it can feed a normal line input on an amplifier or powered speakers without a separate phono box.
- Fully automatic: the arm cues itself and returns at the end of the side.

How it sits in the catalogue
Its belt-drive mechanism is the majority choice in the database (151 of 183). A built-in phono stage puts it with the 47% of current decks that plug straight into any amp or powered speaker. Fully-automatic operation is rarer than you might expect — only 13 of 183 current models cue and return the arm themselves. On price it sits toward the top of its category — 77% of priced hi-fi decks cost less.
Cartridge and replacement stylus
Factory cartridge: Ortofon 2M Red · replacement stylus: Stylus 2M Red · around $97.
