Audio-Technica's top-of-the-line and first semi-automatic turntable: low-torque direct drive with speed sensor, end-of-side auto-lift and auto-stop, 1-inch-thick damped aluminum platter and a 1960s-inspired J-shaped tonearm. Phono-level output only — needs an external preamp.

Model history: The AT-LP8X sits above the AT-LP5X in Audio-Technica's range, adding semi-automatic operation, a more premium MDF wood body, an improved tonearm, and support for heavier cartridges (up to 23.5g versus 20g).

Who it suits

Best suited to: a first serious turntable for an existing or planned amp-and-speakers setup. Less ideal for: plugging straight into passive speakers with no amp — check the built-in phono stage row above, and note most hi-fi decks still need external amplification.
