Buying context

At this price the cartridge is almost always ceramic rather than magnetic, which is harder on vinyl and rolls off detail — fine for the occasional play, less fine as a daily driver. If you can stretch another $50–100, the jump to a magnetic cartridge (see our under-$200 list) is the single biggest step up in sound and record wear at the entry end.
